Q

How can I tell if I have a 64-bit edition of Windows or macOS?

A

64-bit applications need a 64-bit edition of Windows or macOS for them to run. 32-bit applications will work on both 32- and 64-bit editions of Windows and macOS.

The simplest way of finding out if you have a 64-bit system is to try installing a 64-bit download from this web site. Alternatively:

To find out whether you have a 64-bit edition of macOS:

  • Click on the Apple symbol in the top left of the screen and choose "about this Mac".
  • You will be shown a dialog showing you the OS X version and processor type.
  • As long as you have a version of macOS that is 10.5 or greater, and you have a 64-bit processor then your Mac is capable of running 64-bit programs. To find out if you have a 64-bit processor go here.
